Wipeout or Image Clip using a Circle

If you ever need to mask part of an image using a circle, you might know that neither WIPEOUT or IMAGECLIP support the selection of a circle. One way to work around this is to use the POLYGON command to draw your "circle" - just use a high number of sides, maybe 200.

After you create the multi-sided polygon, just use the WIPEOUT or IMAGECLIP command. If you use IMAGECLIP, make sure the Invert option is set correctly.

See below for examples. The top image is a inverted image clip created from a 200-sided polygon, which approximates a circle very well. The bottom image contains another 200-sided polygon with a wipeout applied, and a closed spline converted to a polyline, to which an inverted image clip has been applied.

Inserting a circular raster image

If you are a long time, experienced user of AutoCAD, how many times have you stepped back and looked at the program from a novice point of view? Think about some of the tasks that seem trivial to you and then consider how you might perform them if you were new to AutoCAD.

I ran into this case recently, when the question was brought up "How to bring in a raster image in the shape of a circle?" Easy, right? But think about being a new AutoCAD user and not knowing about the various commands used to do this, or even how to go about finding them. I have not search Help, but I doubt this particular task could be found in the User's Guide.

On to the problem. Read more »
