Windows 7 - Remote Assistance
Submitted by rkmcswain on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 17:50With Remote Assistance, typically you invite someone to help you or someone may invite you to help them. Unfortunately, the latter process relies on the person needing help being able to generate the "help request".
I have always found it easier to initiate the Remote Assistance session myself without involving the user at all. There is a tricky shortcut for doing this with Windows XP on the host machine:
However a host machine running Windows 7 (and Vista I believe), uses the executable MSRA.EXE. You can run this from the Windows command prompt or the Start->Run window. If you run the command MSRA /?, a help window will appear showing you all of the available options. To create a shortcut to initiate a RA session, use the following for your shortcut target:
%systemroot%\system32\msra.exe /offerra
After you run this command, you enter the hostname of the target computer and you will be connected. The operator of the remote computer will still have to give you permission to finish the connection. Read more »
Windows 7 - Start, Run
Submitted by rkmcswain on Fri, 10/08/2010 - 11:39Are you missing the "Run" option on the Start menu in Windows 7? It is not there by default, although you can still use the "Win+R" key combination to launch the Run dialog. If you want to restore the Start Menu "Run" item, follow along....
- Right click on the Start Button
, choose Properties.
- On the dialog that opens, select the Start Menu tab, and then pick the Customize button.
- On the dialog that opens, scroll down until you see the Run toggle, and check it on.
- Press OK, and OK, and now when you left-click the start menu, the Run option will be there
