ARES 2D/3D CAD application now available for Linux
Submitted by rkmcswain on Thu, 09/30/2010 - 12:56
Graebert announces that ARES Commander Edition for Linux is now shipping. If you are not familier with ARES Commander Edition, see my earlier post including a review of this application (Windows version) that I performed for Cadalyst this spring.
You may remember that ARES for Mac OS X was made available several weeks ago, just before Autodesk announced AutoCAD for Mac.
A 30 day trial of ARES is available, and special introductory pricing (€ 495) is in effect until the end of December. System requirements for Linux, Mac, and Windows are available here. Read more »

AutoCAD 2011 Hatching Issue
Submitted by rkmcswain on Thu, 09/23/2010 - 07:22One of the new features in 2011 is the ability to preview the hatch while moving the cursor over objects in your drawing. I think many people have already figured this one out, but if you are working in anything other than a simple drawing, this can degrade performance significantly.
One way to fix this is to revert to the pre-2011 method of hatching by restoring the Hatch dialog box instead of using the Ribbon. You can do this be setting HPDLGMODE to 1. If you would prefer to keep using the Ribbon, then you can turn off the hatch preview by setting HPQUICKPREVIEW to 0 or OFF. Read more »
AutoCAD for Mac won't go away
Submitted by rkmcswain on Tue, 09/14/2010 - 18:44Let's revisit the How do you feel about AutoCAD for Mac poll once more. Steve Johnson (at the top of my list of most respected CAD bloggers BTW...) commented that he did not vote since there was "no option that accurately reflects my own feelings...because the options are all either positive or neutral". I initially replied to the comment, but now feel a better reply is needed. Read more »
Turn your Ducks off
Submitted by rkmcswain on Tue, 09/14/2010 - 07:05Turn your Ducks off...? What is he talking about?
OK, if you work in the Civil world for example, you may find yourself working primarily in 2D, with the exception of some 3D entities like 3D polylines, 3D COGO points, and maybe 3D lines. Say you are working on a drawing full of 3D COGO points and you notice the cursor is sluggish, or it feels like it has glue on it.... Before you disassemble your mouse, take a look down at your status bar for the DUCS (Get it? Ducks...???) icon. It will look like one of these two images depending on if you have status bar icons enabled. Read more »
Run Civil 3D without Map Features to save memory
Submitted by rkmcswain on Thu, 09/09/2010 - 11:53
I normally read the RSS feeds from the Autodesk Knowledge Base pretty regularly, but I missed this one. Tony's Civil 3D World alerted me to a new kb article (TS13390398) from Autodesk that describes how to set up shortcuts to launch Civil 3D without loading the Map 3D functions. According to the article, this can save 85MB of memory.
AutoCAD for Mac Poll
Submitted by rkmcswain on Thu, 09/09/2010 - 10:01I posted a poll a few days ago asking how you feel about AutoCAD for Mac. (If you have not voted, please do). It's pretty even so far, with 1/3 Excited, 1/3 Curious, and 1/3 that could not care less.
I wish I had access to a Mac on which to give it a run. Maybe at AU this year, I can get my hands on it..? If you are able to attend Autodesk University 2010, there are several classes available geared towards AutoCAD for Mac. Shaan Hurley has them listed in this post on his blog. Read more »

Submitted by rkmcswain on Wed, 09/01/2010 - 09:55The system variable PICKADD has been changed for 2011. Most people probably will not notice, but I like it. Previously, there were 2 choices for this variable, 0 and 1. A setting of 2 was added. See the summary below.
- 0 - means that only your last selection is valid. In other words, if you select a entity, then select another entity, the first one becomes unselected.
- 1 - is what most people use. This allows you to continue to add entities to a selection set.
- 2 - works just like 1, expect that when using the ._Select command, the entities remain selected when the command is over. Previously when you used the ._Select command then executed a command, you had to use _P to refer to the previous selection set. Now you can use the ._Select command, create a selection and then launch the desired command with the selected objects pre-selected.
