http://twitter.com/AutoCADResearchGoodbye Autodesk Newsgroups
Submitted by rkmcswain on Sun, 05/23/2010 - 16:21I found the Autodesk newsgroups back in 1995, and learned a lot from many people over the years. This was way before the forums of Augi, CadTutor, Cadalyst, etc. In fact the main reason for starting CAD Panacea (and my earlier, now idle Blogspot site), was to give back to the community for all of the information I picked up over the years in the Autodesk newsgroups.
Back to the subject.... Autodesk has decided to terminate the NNTP based newsgroups, and move 100% to HTML based forums. I'll reserve judgment until I see the new interface, but I don't see how this can be an improvement. NNTP is text based, isn't slowed down by avatars or advertising, and doesn't require registration. Here is an FAQ from Autodesk on the matter. Read more »
Civil 3D 2011 and Raster Design
Submitted by rkmcswain on Thu, 05/20/2010 - 18:05
If you have Civil 3D 2011 and need to import raster images like MrSid and ECW format (who doesn't?), then you will need the Raster Design Object Enabler since there is no Raster Design 2011 yet. But wait, there is no Raster Design Object Enabler for 2011 either. Oops.
Fortunately, someone figured out how to hack the 2010 RD Object Enabler so that it will work with Civil 3D 2011, and the resident MAP guru, Murph himself, posted the solution over a month ago (AutoCAD Map 2011 needs this hack too...). Since the 2010 version works for 2011, I'm not sure why Autodesk has not written an installer for it. IMO, support for these image types should be built into Civil 3D and Map anyway.
I do not have any information on when to expect a 2011 version of Raster Design or the RD Object Enabler.
UPDATE (31 JUN 2010): The Raster Design 2011 Object Enabler has been released. Read more »
AutoCAD LT rebate
Submitted by rkmcswain on Mon, 05/17/2010 - 13:23AutoCAD LT is currently available from at least two vendors here in the U.S. for 719.99 after Autodesk rebate, both offer free shipping.
I can't say how long Newegg and/or Amazon will keep their current price, but the $300 rebate is available for any purchase of AutoCAD LT made between May 1 and July 18, 2010.
You can also buy AutoCAD LT from the Autodesk Store, but it will set you back $160 more. Read more »
How to do this job...
Submitted by rkmcswain on Wed, 05/12/2010 - 21:19After an initial rant that led to a meeting with Autodesk (and a follow up Survey), the author of the Skatterbrainz Blog has posted another valid complaint - lack of ability to perform complete, unattended uninstalls of Autodesk products.
What do you think? How does this rate on your list of "things I wish Autodesk would do"? -or- Is this the job of a separate "application deployment" software such as Altiris, in a large enterprise environment? Read more »
Cadalyst Web Site
Submitted by rkmcswain on Tue, 05/11/2010 - 07:35Using certain browsers with certain security settings, if you have tried to visit the Cadalyst web site or forums in the last couple of days, you may have received a message saying that the Cadalyst domain was an "attack site".
The fact of the matter is that on Friday, May 7, 2010, the news feed that Cadalyst picks up from Tenlinks.com carried a link to malware, so Google has flagged the entire Cadalyst domain with a warning (seen above) that you may see in your browser.
Rest assured that Cadalyst has cleared up the problem and then filed a request with Google to remove the warning. As of this morning, it still shows up when using Firefox (v3.5.9) and Chrome (v4.1.249.1064). Until Google gets this cleared up, I suggest using IE8 to visit Cadalyst.com, as it does not show this false warning.
UPDATE: Issue resolved. See comment below. Read more »
Missing Shape Files
Submitted by rkmcswain on Sun, 05/09/2010 - 08:20One of the more popular topics here is the Select Shape File post from February 2006, where I explained why you might be prompted to select a shape file, and ways to eliminate this prompt.
Well, Autodesk has taken this one step further in AutoCAD 2011 and now offers you a way to eliminate this prompt forever.

If you check the toggle "Always perform my current choice" and then select "Ignore the missing SHX files and continue", then you shouldn't be prompted again. Read more »
