  • Want hard copy manuals to go with your AutoCAD?

Back in the day of R13 and earlier, AutoCAD used to come with enough hard copy manuals to stack 7 or 8 inches high. I've still got more than one R13 box, although not all the books. Nowdays you receive a plastic DVD box with a disk. The manuals are still there, they are just in electronic form now.

Some people prefer this method, and it certainly saves tons of paper. I'm sure there were some people who received the giant box of manuals in the old days and never even cracked them. Are you one of the other type? Do you still like a real paper book in your hands? Read on...

  • AutoCAD 2010 works fine with IE6

The AutoCAD 2010 system requirements say that IE7 or later is required. However, I created a 32-bit deployment for AutoCAD 2010, and unchecked the IE requirement box, then installed on a machine with IE6, and AutoCAD 2010 runs just fine.

I know, IE6 is pretty old, but some people still run other software that won't run on anything newer than IE6.

  • 3D AutoCAD survey

Happy belated birthday to Heidi Hewett!
For her birthday, she is asking us to take a survey on 3D AutoCAD. Go ahead and click the link - it won't take long and it's free.

  • Unemployed? How about some free software and training?

Both Autodesk and Solidworks Several companies are offering incentives to the unemployed engineering community.

Solidworks, through their SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package, is offering free 3D CAD software, free training materials, free certification, and job leads to unemployed US and Canada residents.

Autodesk, through their Autodesk Assistance Program, is offering free software licenses, free online training, reduced-cost classroom training, and discounts on certification. This offer is good until December 31, 2009.

Bentley has a similar program including software and training.

On a related note, Engineered Efficiency, Inc, is offering free Civil 3D training to "those who have recently lost their jobs".

  • Autodesk Design Review 2010

Autodesk Design Review is an application for viewing, markup, and printing of DWF files. If you have DWG Trueview installed also, you can "open" DWG files with it. Actually, what it does is use Trueview to open the DWG and plot it to DWF using the last saved plot settings.

Best that I can tell, you have two options for getting this application

    • Download a tiny (271k) executable which is just a launcher for an online install. The destination computer must have internet access to install this version.
    • Download a massive (743MB) file that contains Design Review along with both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of DWG Trueview

    Links below.

  • DWG TrueView 2010

DWG Trueview is a standalone program that allows you to view and print AutoCAD DWG files. There are limited measuring tools also included. DWG Trueview is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Direct download links are given below.
